LIVE IN OCTOBER #tour for #TheatreofHate

THEATRE OF HATE
ANNOUNCE EXTENSIVE AUTUMN UK TOUR

UK TOUR STARTS NEXT MONTH

Cult favourites THEATRE OF HATE have announced a run of UK shows this Autumn. In 1980, Kirk Brandon formed Theatre Of Hate from the ashes of heralded punk band The Pack. Joining Kirk on vocals were notable punk musicians Stan Stammers and Luke Rendall, along with old school friend, Steve Guthrie and Canadian born John “Boy” Lennard, who revolutionised the band’s sound with his haunting sax lines.

Theatre Of Hate’s debut double-A-side single, “Legion”/”Original Sin”, topped the independent chart in 1980, and “Westworld”, their debut album, produced by Mick Jones from The Clash and released in 1982, held the number one position for 21 weeks. The single taken from the album, “Do You Believe In The Westworld?” has become an anthem and is still widely played in clubs and on international radio, as well as featuring on numerous compilation albums.

Supporting the likes of The Clash & Ian Dury lead to Theatre Of Hate headlining major venues across the UK & Northern Europe.

Theatre Of Hate imploded in 1982, with Kirk taking Stan forward to form Spear Of Destiny, but the band has resurfaced over the years to play some very special shows.
Having been asked by John Curd to join The Damned for a massive show at London’s infamous Roundhouse in December 2014 the band once again joined the fray. A short set of dates around the London anchor show attracted rave reviews, as did a 6 night night SOLD OUT run in December 2014. (see reviews below)

2015 saw the band play two short jaunts across the UK in April and December both sets of dates wowed large crowds.

During touring in 2014 and 2015 the band constantly recorded at Oxygen Studios in Manchester, the first new studio album in 30+ years is now complete and released via a private pledge! 'Kinshi' was released on October 14th 2016 on CD, Vinyl, Download & Dub to pledgers. The 12 brand new songs are simply stunning. 2017 is looking like a very busy year with the album getting labels releases in Europe & the USA. Shows in the UK, Europe and the USA are already on sale.

Kirk, Stan and John will be joined by current Spear Of Destiny band member Adrian Portas (New Model Army) on guitar and Chris Bell(Hugh Cornwall) on drums to pay homage to the iconic TOH sound.

#tourdates from @seanmcgowanuk supporting @BillyBragg NEW EP Graft and Grief out now

SEAN McGOWAN

ANNOUNCED AS LEAD SUPPORT FOR
BILLY BRAGG'S AUTUMN TOUR

BRAND NEW EP ‘GRAFT & GRIEF’ - OUT NOW

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR ‘COSTA DEL SOLUTION’

"Seán writes the sort of music that enters your ear canal and doesn’t leave your brain for weeks on end.” - Already Heard (4/5)

"Channeling the great voices of political and social minded artists, ‘Clear Conscience’ has the vocal snarl of Joe Strummer, the colloquialism of Billy Bragg, and the occasional fragile cracks of an Owen, Frank Turner, or any road-worn acoustic punk.” - Vulture Hound  (5/5)

"One to watch!"- Billy Bragg & Fred Perry Subculture

Following the completion of a headline tour that has featured some of his biggest UK shows to date, today Seán McGowan is delighted to announce his confirmation as lead support act on Billy Bragg’s Autumn Tour.

The news directly follows thrilling back-to-back sold out shows in London and Southampton of his own over the weekend, with Seán now looking to the coming months and these major billings with one of his idols and chief supporters at some of the country’s more capacious venues.

Kicking off at the London Islington Assembly Hall on 7th November,  Seán will open up for the 'Bard of Barking' at a number of towns and cities including Cambridge, Birmingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Nottingham and more on this two week stint. Full dates and venues below.

Releasing his debut EP for Xtra Mile Recordings: ’Graft & Grief’ earlier this month, the Southampton-born punk poet has also recently revealed a brand new video for featured track: ‘Costa Del Solution’.

Making the trip from his native Southampton to hit the beaches of Bournemouth on something of brief vacation of his own, the video for ‘Costa Del Solution’ was filmed in just two days earlier this summer. Teaming up once again with Director and friend Robert Goulding (the man also at the helm for Seán’s former 'No Show' and 'Apple Core’ videos), the video sees Seán re-visit the getaway spot of his formative years as he reflects on our fixation with the short-lived escapism of the holiday getaway.

Speaking about Costa Del Solution, Seán says:

“It dawned on me that people spend 50 weeks of the year thinking about the 2 weeks they get away on holiday. Whilst it's great to have something to look forward to - I don't think you're doing life right if you're not enjoying more than two weeks a year. It's tied in with this feeling of being stuck on the conveyor which is a theme that runs through this record. Doing as was done by those before you. Falling into routine. It's nonsense, do what you want, have fun and make it work.”
Sean’s recent extended-player ‘Graft & Grief’ is out now and available on silver vinyl, CD and digital.

Alongside ‘Costa Del Solution’, the EP features a total of 7 tracks including familiar former singles ‘No Show’ and ‘Apple Core’, plus two poems ‘Gag (Part 1)’ and ‘Gag (Part 2)’ that bookend the piece. Capturing Seán’s lyrical dexterity, knack for penning a catchy melody and laser sharp social commentary, the ‘Graft & Grief’ EP is an impressive new release from an artist rapidly establishing himself as a formidable talent. An impressive showcase of socially canny tunes; ‘Graft & Grief’ is an accomplished insight into the realities of being young and musically-motivated in modern England. For the first time, the Graft & Grief’ EP also sees Seán flesh out his dextrous lyrics with the backing of a full band throughout.
Following career-high festival sets at Beautiful Days and Common People over the Summer, plus his biggest headline gigs to date touring with the 'Graft & Grief’ EP; Seán will now play the following dates with Billy Bragg:

NOVEMBER TOUR 2017

Thu 16 Nov 2017 Newcastle Wylam Brewery

Sat 18 Nov 2017 Nottingham Rock City

Sun 19 Nov 2017 Cardiff Trashed

Tue 21 Nov 2017 Southampton The Brook

Seán has felt part of the Xtra Mile family for a while now, through his regular touring with the likes of Frank Turner, Skinny Lister, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Rob Lynch and Beans On Toast.  Over the past 6 years Seán has been steadily building up his now considerable fan base by being near a constant force on the touring circuit as well as supporting Billy Bragg and performing packed out slots at Glastonbury and The Great Escape.

Raised on a diet of The Clash, The Jam, Specials, Billy Bragg and other such politically-charged, punk-ignited British pop, 21 year old Seán self-released two EPs either given away or sold on a pay what you want basis at shows, plus two slices of teenage Southampton life entitled ‘Come Unstuck’ (featuring Frank Turner on backing vocals) and ‘Swings & Roundabouts’, released as a double a-side 7”. Writing has already begun on the album, due to arrive sometime in early 2018.

‘Graft & Grief’ is out on Xtra Mile Recordings Now

New album "Salem" from @HolyMolyHQ and a #tour including #newcastle @CobaltStudios_

HOLY MOLY
AND THE CRACKERS
ANNOUNCE THEIR BIGGEST HEADLINE TOUR TO DATE
TO PROMOTE RELEASE OF 2017 ALBUM 'SALEM'

HOLY MOLY & THE CRACKERS are delighted to announce their biggest UK tour to date.

Holy Moly and The Crackers hail from the North East of the UK and have a loyal, devoted and ever-increasing fan base: “They are a bunch of wild gypsy troubadours with more than a touch of magic about them” (Diva). The band have built themselves an enviable reputation, pulling packed houses for their ferocious, visceral live shows, and in November they will be heading out on their biggest headline tour to date, to promote their gutsy new album Salem.

Over recent years Holy Moly & The Crackers have produced a moonshine mix of genres, creating their own unique and compelling sound, influenced by an electric and eclectic range of folk and popular music.  But Salem, which they will unleash this year, is a departure. It’s folk only insofar as the songs are built around a narrative – they have a driving, urgent beat about them. The band has hardly drawn breath over the last two years – furiously touring and developing their live show, yet all the while creating new material, pushing at their sound, moving things on: The new songs are darker, starker: they have a “fiery new urgency” (Crack Magazine).

Premiered on God Is The In The TV Zine and Clash Magazine, Salem is lifting the band’s live show to another level: “We’re changing and developing all the time” say the band. ‘We describe ourselves as ‘gypsy-folk-rock’, but that’s a very loose time.  Now there’s a bigger beat; more compulsion, a harder drive, a darker underbelly. We’re toughening up.”

Holy Moly & The Crackers are surely one of hardest working bands on the circuit with a following that multiplies with every tour. Over the last two years they have toured the UK extensively, and made impressive debuts in France, Germany, Italy, Holland. Their festival appearances include Glastonbury, Bestival, Hop Farm, Cornbury, Secret Garden Party, Boomtown Fair, Wilderness, Larmer Tree, Kendal Calling, Underneath The Stars, Belladrum, Just So, plus many more. At Towersey Festival 2016 they were introduced to the main stage as “festival band of the year”.

#review @nikkershaw @Sage_gateshead 17/9/17

Review: An Evening With Nik Kershaw
at The Sage, Gateshead 17/09/2017

Nik Kershaw has written a lot of songs. Despite a break in recording for a decade, he was always writing for someone. He’s also got a lot of stories and a self-deprecating sense of humour. He easily filled the two-and-a-half hours with tunes and chat and had the sold-out Hall 2 of the Sage enraptured. Taking advantage of the perfect sound conditions in the hall, and armed with a loop pedal, guitar and computer, Nik put on a superb show. Synced video added to the visual experience with three screens behind Nik showing appropriate footage. For The Riddle Nik sang in perfect time to the 1984 video, which was impressive. Nik played songs from a number of his albums and gave an explanation for the origin of most of them. The crowd happily joined in with clapping and singing along to the big hits. This is a highly recommended night out.

#gigreview Great EP Launch for @PicnicbandUK @O2Academynew #photos

Review: Picnic EP Launch
 at O2 Academy 16/9/2017

With fantastic support from a trio of superb bands Picnic had to be something special to be the headliners. St Buryan, Post Rome and Peace Frog are all headliner material themselves. So this made for a great night out at the O2.

Picnic, a 7 piece jazz-influenced pop band from Sunderland, have a new EP out called Nothing to Write Home About which turns out to be false modesty as they are rather good! Joyful jazzy pop with changing time signatures and funky rhythms had the audience dancing and my foot tapping. Starting with Bill You Murray Me and then Madame Butterly the band showed their syncopated unique style. Someone at the gig mentioned 90s Acid Jazz? I’m not sure. 45 To Go was a particularly catchy pop number from the EP. The pace was disrupted nicely by a slower number Everything Nothing. The sheer size of the band and variety of instruments including piano and brass make every song a big production. Fronted by cheerful Robyn Walker, the band is perfect festival fodder. I get the impression they have the requisite number of sandwiches for a Picnic, and are headed for success.

DANNY & THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD

SET TO RELEASE NEW DOUBLE ALBUM ‘BRILLIANT LIGHT’ - OUT 23RD JUNE 2017

AUTUMN UK TOUR DATES ON SALE NOW

REVEALS NEW SINGLE: “SWIFT STREET” LISTEN

Here come Danny & The Champions Of The World with album number 6 - writing themselves large, giving themselves the space and taking the time to deliver a magnum opus.

With Brilliant Light Danny Wilson has made his All Things Must Pass - a big record of hit after hit stretching over two albums plus a further bonus set of instrumentals. ‘Swift Street’ is the first song to be shared from ‘Brilliant Light’.

Listen to “Swift Street” here: https://soundcloud.com/loose-music/danny-the-champions-of-the-world-swift-street/

Producer and bass player Chris Clarke says outright it’s the best record the band has come up with so far while for Danny it’s:

“a bit like taking a peek into somebody’s house, there’s great stuff that immediately grabs your attention and then there’s other stuff and you start out thinking it might be a bit mundane, but as the whole picture takes shape it proves to be incredibly beautiful”

That’s typical Danny Wilson a brave stab at modesty but far too honest to sell himself short. He and his band are already much loved for their whole-hearted openness their democracy and their sheer joy in what they do. They’re going to be loved too for this record. Very soon Brilliant Light will be the soundtrack to an awful lot of people’s lives and that is no small achievement.

‘Swift Street’ is deeply personal to Danny George Wilson who co-wrote the song with Polly Paulusma and Carra Bacon. Inspired by three family photographs Swift Street in Melbourne Australia is where Danny’s mother grew up and where in childhood he stayed with his grandparents. The song is near-Proustian in its recall of smells and tastes of past days.

He’s allowed both himself and his band the absolute freedom to explore experiment and collaborate - and they’ve grabbed it with both hands.Hidden away somewhere in this diverse collection you’ll find the question “can we release ourselves back into the brilliant light?”. For Danny the brilliant light is creativity, but more than that it’s collaborative creativity, and the process of birthing these songs, both by design and then serendipity, has been to maximise the creative potential of all The Champs.

The band embark on a UK tour in September:-

#REVIEW @DaveStewart BRASSTASTIC #homecoming birthday gig @sundempire went down a storm!

A Brasstastic Birthday Homecoming for
Dave Stewart

As the audience liked to remind us. Dave Stewart is “One of Ours”. Having never played Sunderland since he was a fresh faced 17-year-old, Stewart decided to play Ringmaster to a fantastic show celebrating his musical career and his 65th birthday, at the Sunderland Empire.

Known as the “Ringmaster” for his diversely populated stages, Dave handpicked the support including 3 superb young bands. Picnic were a lively female fronted 8-piece with brass section. Their complex rhythms, syncopated structures brought to mind a combination of Big Country with a hint of math rock. I can see these getting snapped up for festivals.

Lilliput brought the power pop with close harmony vocals and insightful lyrics. They have a big sound bolstered by 3 guitars and a piano. With the 90s style fashion making a comeback, why not magical guitar pop in the vein of Jellyfish, David Devant and His Spirit Wife, and our own more recent local power pop merchant Toxic Melons? We approve!

Another quick changeover, for which the technical team should be applauded, and Social Room took to the stage. A genuinely talented local band with strong melody and solid vocals the band add sweeping synths for superb catchy tunes. Social Room evidently already have a good following already judging from the audience response. The Sunderland-inspired song SR7 brought to mind Robbie Williams (in a good way) and The Who, a cracking tune indeed. The band exhibit powerful song writing mirroring that of the superb This Ground Moves from Newcastle. By rights. This band should be all over the charts. Meanwhile catch them if you can in gigs around the northeast.

Before Dave Stewart took to the stage we are treated to a lovely rendition of City By The Sea by Lake Poets’ Martin Longstaff. Short story cut even shorter: Martin was picked up by Dave Stewart and had his 2014 album Honest Hearts recorded in the Nashville Blackbird Studios. Dave Stewart clearly believes in nurturing young talent.

After a tightly packed support lineup, Dave Stewart emerged with a full Nashville band, backing singers (who stepped ably into Annie’s shoes at several points) and a lot of rhinestones. Focussing first on his blues rock repertoire (though Eurythmics songs are largely blues based if you listen), we were treated to a massive version of Magic In The Blues: a story of a decade in reverse ending with meeting Annie Lennox.

The night was a rare opportunity to here Eurythmic songs played live with more live instruments and vocals than I ever have before. Here Comes The Rain Again with blues guitar and Jealousy with added steel guitar were a real treat. Dave has written under pseudonym for other stars. Old Habits Die Hard had the vocal talents of Matty from Social Room in place of Mick Jagger, and Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell stepped in for Tom Petty in a great vocal and guitar performance for Don’t Come Around Here No More. Another fantastic surprise was when a grand piano was wheeled out and Diane Birch launched into a fantastic duet with Dave and the band before bringing a whole new sound to There Must Be An Angel Playing With My Heart. It simmered and boiled over into a full band epic performance.

Fresh from the Great North Run, Broadway and West End star Ryan Molloy led a blistering version of Thorn In My Side, and got the audience singing along.
Dave Stewart peppered the evening with stories of his days growing up in Sunderland, lamented the passing of industry and hailed the cultural future of the city. Martin Longstaff returned to the stage along with the Easington Colliery Band for a truly beautiful rendition of When The Day Goes Down.

After a break and costume change we had Would I Lie to You, a groovy funky big band version of the original. And for an amazing encore everyone including the brass band returned to the stage for Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This). The stage could not have taken much more talent! The audience rose to their feet and the classic pop tune took on a life of its own with the audience and all the musicians giving it their all. A truly amazing homecoming for Dave Stewart-don’t leave it so long next time marra!

HOWIE PAYNE

ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘MOUNTAIN’

RELEASED OCTOBER 27TH ON FULL STACK RECORDS

NEW TRACK ‘HIGH TIMES’ AVAILABLE WITH ALBUM PRE-ORDERS

LISTEN ON SOUNDCLOUD

+ HEADLINE OCTOBER UK TOUR

HOWIE PAYNE has announced details of his long-awaited new album ‘Mountain’, to be released on October 27th on Full Stack Records and a headline UK tour to coincide with the release.

The new album, The Stands’ frontman’s first since his 2009 Ethan Johns-produced debut ‘Bright Light Ballads’, contains the recent Radio X playlisted single ‘The Brightest Star’ plus new track ‘High Times’, which is available as an instant grat with album pre-orders from www.howiepayne.com

‘Mountain’ was recorded at London’s State of The Ark Studios during the last week of July 2017 before being mixed and mastered in Los Angeles.

"I think 'Mountain' is my best record so far,” says Howie.“It’s got a mellow vibe but the songs are rooted in real life which gives it some weight and a bit of edge’.

“We recorded it in just four days, and pretty much live, during one of the hottest weeks of the year, and you can hear it in the sound, like the voltage is heavier, and the air is thicker in the silence between the instruments. Most of the tracks were recorded in just a few takes - we'd never played them together before but the band were just really on it. We'd run through a song once or twice, get the sounds up and then play it until we got a version that sparked. I did 'Bright Light Ballads' the same way and I really dug how after you do a take you can listen to the song right then, with the singing and everything. I've made records where I've built it up from a zillion parts, and it's cool, but I went at this one live because there's something different about the feel you get into the songs when everyone’s playing and singing at the same time, you know."

Listen to ‘High Times’ on Soundcloud‘ or The Brightest Star’ on Soundcloud, Spotify or iTunes

In October Howie will embark on a headline UK tour. The set will feature songs by The Stands, songs from ‘Bright Light Ballads’, plus Howie will premiere the new songs from ‘Mountain’. The ten-date tour starts at Liverpool Buyers Club on October 12th and culminates with a show at The Borderline in London on October 28th.

Blancmange are set to release a new album of 10 songs written and recorded by Neil Arthur and co-produced by Benge (Wrangler/John Foxx & The Maths and Gazelle Twin co-producer). Blancmange will also embark on a UK tour to coincide with the album's release. Kicking off in Brighton on October 5th, the ten date tour takes in London and even Darwen and ends in Nottingham on November 4th.

It’s been a fantastically creative period for both Arthur and Benge, releasing their debut album as a new electronic duo – Fader’s First Light - in June 2017 and then the final sessions for Unfurnished Rooms followed immediately in the summer. For the new Blancmange album, all the songs were written by Arthur while Benge added percussion and layers of analogue synth, with the pair then mixing the record together in the latter’s Memetune studios in Cornwall.

The latest cut from Unfurnished Rooms, Anna Dine signals a Cure-like moodiness. Neil remarks, "In between the straight and narrow lines of our lives, there in amongst the particles, in between, is another world. The invisible, the mundane, the innocuous. It's in these gaps, like moments, that hold us together. That's what I was trying to evoke with 'Anna Dine'. And musically it's all nestling in a veritable poupurée of vintage analogue synthesisers."

Unfurnished Rooms opens with the echoing, playful title track, a search for something that always feels just out of reach and incomplete. Like many tracks on the album there’s a feeling of being lost in a dream - a house where rooms are unfurnished/unfinished, doors lead to private, empty apartments and images flicker. The reality is, as Arthur sings on the opener, ‘no amount of online shopping will cover for the loss.’

The album follows the release of the first three Blancmange records – Happy Families (1982), Mange Tout (1984) and Believe You Me (1985) – as deluxe 3CD editions this summer. Despite breaking up in 1986, those records weren’t quite the end for Neil and original Blancmange partner Stephen Luscombe as they came back to great acclaim in 2011 with their fourth studio album, Blanc Burn –  ‘new sounds and renewed enthusiasm’ (The Guardian).

Semi Detached (darker but still pop-savvy) followed in 2015, the first of several new albums written and recorded by Neil Arthur without the input of Luscombe due to illness. Blancmange’s first ever instrumental album, Nil By Mouth (ambient, new sense of freedom) came out in 2015 and Commuter 23 (minimalist, brutalist, raw with moments of hazy Krautrock) arrived in 2016.
